Richard Brooks Retires from PEXCO after 30 years in the Fence Industry

Please join us in extending very best wishes to Richard Brooks of Pexco LLC, who retired on December 31, 2018. Richard has been an esteemed member of the Fence Industry for over thirty years and will be greatly missed by all who have had the pleasure of knowing and working with him.

Richard’s roots in the plastics industry run very deep. His 46-year career began in 1972 in Brooklyn, New York, where he ran Gem Plastics Extrusion Co. Inc.- a small extrusion firm that was originally started by his father. In 1986, Richard sold the business to a larger plastic extrusion company – Tri-Seal International, located in Blauvelt, New York – and went to work for them as Sales and GM of their Profile Extrusion Division. As a key addition to their Medical Tubing and other custom extruded product lines, Richard launched Tri-Seal’s Fence Slat business, where he helped to pioneer and patent the popular Winged Slat® Fence product. By 1998, Tri-Seal sold their now thriving Profile Division to Duall Plastics, a member of the American Filtrona Group of extrusion companies located in Athol, Massachusetts. Richard went along with the acquisition and relocated from New York to Massachusetts.

As Duall Plastics’ business grew in subsequent years, the company’s name and ownership changed several times along the way from American Filtrona to Bunzl Extrusion to Filtrona Extrusion and finally to Pexco. During Richard’s 21 years at Pexco, he was promoted from Senior Sales Manager to Vice President of Sales and Marketing, where he ran Pexco’s Medical Products Division as well as their Fence Products Division – better known to the industry as PDS® Fence Products. Under Richard’s leadership, PDS® Fence Products grew into the world’s largest and most well-known manufacturer of Privacy Fence Slat products for chain link fencing. Through hard work, consistent Slat product innovation, creative marketing programs and intellectual property development, Richard and his team built solid, long-lasting service relationships with most of the leading Fence Distributors in North America. Pexco continues to serve the industry through their two state-of-the-art extrusion facilities in Massachusetts and Washington.

Richard is known throughout the industry for his strong but fair work ethic, good business sense, friendly disposition, and dedication to collaboration and industry development. Richard was always proud to say that “the most important asset of any successful business person is the people on his or her team” and demonstrated that through his steadfast example. He was consistently known as a great supporter and mentor of anyone with whom he worked over the years and leaves behind a tremendous legacy of the power of encouragement and teamwork.

Richard was an active member in the AFA, ASTM, CLFMI and CFIA for decades. He participated on the ASTM member committee to draft the first and only ASTM Standard Spec for Plastic Privacy Fence Slats for Chain Link Fence (F3000/F3000M-13). Richard participated in over thirty FenceTech Trade Shows and twice that number of Regional Fence Trade Shows. In addition to his Industry involvement, Richard was personally responsible for all of Pexco’s Fence Patents and Trademarks.

Richard currently resides in central Massachusetts with his significant other, Nancy, and will eventually move closer to the New York area to be closer to his two daughters and granddaughter in New York City. In addition to being a veteran of several New York City Marathons, Richard enjoys running, biking, swimming, driving his sports cars, good movies, and tumbling with his Bernese Mountain Dog, Rudy.

Richard says the thing he will miss most about the Fence Industry is its people. As one of the Fence Industry’s leading “citizens” for decades, Richard can rest assured that he will be deeply missed as well. His extensive personal and professional contributions – including his exemplary vision, leadership, and commitment – will continue to have a powerful and lasting impact on Pexco’s business and the Fence Marketplace for many years to come. Please join us in extending a heartfelt thanks to Richard for all he has done for our Fence community and in wishing him the very best as he enters this new chapter of a most remarkable life.
