John spent his career immersed in the fence industry. In 1994, John and like-minded fence professional, Dennis Sulser took a leap of faith and began laying the groundwork for what would become their legacy.

In the past twenty-two years, their collective vision has transformed Hurricane Fence Company from a small Fulton Hill start-up in Richmond, Virginia, to a highly regarded AFA Blue Ribbon Contractor with three locations and a dedicated full-time staff of forty.

In recent years, the addition of a thriving Residential Division has provided the opportunity to support homeowners across Virginia, while expanding their body of work.

“Lowndes had a remarkable business intuition. His extensive industry experience and technical savvy helped Hurricane acquire many high profile Government and Commercial fence projects on the East Coast and around the US.

John B. Lowndes

John was a true entrepreneur who never lost that indomitable spirit. He showed the industry that smaller fence contractors could compete and win large projects in an arena dominated by much larger companies.

A mentor to many, John was not one to rest on his laurels. He was a skilled problem solver who was passionate about his work. He held himself and his employees to a standard that kept the company in a constant state of evolution. He recognized that a challenge was simply an opportunity to learn and propel forward.

Creative and generous, John dedicated much of his personal time helping others find their place in the world.

Much more than an intelligent business man, John was an inspiring and charismatic person, whose wit and charm will be missed greatly by his family, friends, employees and longtime business associates.

We now look to the future, with Founding Partner and Owner, Dennis Sulser as President. Hurricane Fence Company remains dedicated to our customers, vendors and employees. Under Sulser’s leadership, Hurricane continues to honor the vision of “two fence guys” whose perseverance showed an industry that a small business could accomplish big things.
